Local is Lekker

In 2016, Shospec entered the Master Builders KZN Annual Excellence in Construction Awards, walking away with the coveted first place in two different categories for Dabmar Manufacturing Plant in Hattingspruit, Dundee and the Sumitomo Rubber SA (Pty) Ltd Project Sunrise in Ladysmith. Our Dabmar project also won a highly commended award in the 2016 Steel Awards, hosted by the Southern African Light Steel Frame Building Association (SASFA) and the Southern African Insitute of Steel Construction (SAISC).

Dabmar Manufacturing Plant; Dundee

The ± 1200m² Dabmar & office block features a modern design with large glazed openings, clean cut lines and dramatic structural features. Double volume areas with unusual overhead walkways and a cantilevered boardroom make this a unique office block. Then there’s the ± 230m² entertainment deck with sunken fire pit and the double-glazed glass walls on the 1st floor,  offering seemingly endless views in order to create a peaceful and calm atmosphere.

For the office block, Shospec managed the entire process from design to completion and were involved in the roofing and exterior side cladding of the factory portal structure. Taking around 10 months to complete, this project pushed the design limits of the LSF system with a finished product that showcases the vast capabilities of building using only LSF and structural steel.

Sumitomo Rubber Plant; Ladysmith

Around 8 tons of steel were used in the construction of the ± 600m² office block extension at the Sumitomo Rubber Plant in Ladysmith.

Due to weight restrictions on the existing building structure, LSF was used for the floors joist system, internal and external wall panels and roof truss structure to construct the second-floor extension.  White IRB sheeting and Fibre cement was used to clad the exterior walls with boxed-out window features in dark grey adding a sleek finish to a modern, functional design.

Master Builders? If you say so!

Our custom-built light-steel frame stand at the 2016 Annual Congress of Master Builders, held at the ICC in Durban, attracted a lot of attention from a unique group of decision-makers and industry experts from the construction industry in Southern Africa. For this project we teamed up with Steel Frame Developments (SFD) and Ceiling and Components specialists, CAPCO, to showcase how innovative and effective light steel framing is and how it can be applied to a range of construction projects.

You’d be mistaken for thinking we’re in this business to win awards but we’re pretty proud of the innovative, fit-for-purpose commercial and residential properties we’ve created with our hard-working crews and other industry professionals!
